Splattered with paint, Angela Fraleigh’s female subjects look like they’re desperately trying to say something. There’s an uneasy vibe in her pieces, making her work even more captivating. Creating a lot of ambiguity, Fraleigh invites us to draw our own conclusions.
Fraleigh explains: “These tensions are heightened as paint itself becomes a tool for the disturbance; a main protagonist in the story and a carrier of meaning. Violent and seductive, threatening and unpredictable it complicates the image leaving us unsure if the figures are being birthed or eaten away; if the paint is taking control, acting as savior, interrupting, manipulating or providing the stimulus for the relationship.”
Fraleigh earned a BFA in Painting at Boston University and a MFA in Painting/Printmaking at Yale. She currently lives in Brooklyn, NY and Allentown, PA.
